Hiking, Babies and Fish and Chips

Woke up at 7 after a refreshing sleep following a long day yesterday. As it is the weekend there are no volunteering duties at BG which meant I had a free day. Anita and one of the other volunteers, her friend Christina, normally called Terps were staying on site so that they could be on call if there were any health issues so the nurses could take a much needed day off. Bryan, Paige and I took the children, loaded ourselves into the 4 x 4 and headed off for a hike up a mountain which i had always wanted to climb,

The mountain is Thabo Bosiu and is famous in Lesotho as being the place where the 1st King - Moshoeshoe I founded the kingdom of Lesotho.  There are many legends surrounding the place but basically there are only 7  passes up to the top and so when he was being attacked by the Zulus he tooke his people up the mountain, set guards at the bottom of the 7 passes and the tribe were safe. From there he ruled the tribe and lived with his people. There are the remains of his stone house, the graves of all the kings and members of the royal family (mostly just piles of stonse) and his circle of logs around a big (now fallen) gum tree which was his court,

Considering Anita and Bryans children are only 9, 8 and 5 they are amazing and as we climbed in intense sun, albeit with a gentle breeze,  they did really well. It was rough walking but very lovely and very beautiful.

We headed back to BG and found that Anita and Terps had gone to the hospital to collect the baby who was due home today. they arrived back mid afternoon with no baby as the doctor could not be found to sign him out! (Does that sound strangely familiar>)  I had a quiet afternoon apart from a storm hanging around with a fair bit of distant thunder,  playing with Mercy and then we planned to go and get fish and chips (hake out here) for supper. Within half an hour of our planned departure the hospital phoned to say the baby was ready so anita and Terps set off again this time with more success.

We managed to get our fish and chips with Anita bringing the baby so she could join us later and eat hers.  Baby now returned safely to its house and housemother which is such good news after the traumas of last week.

I have been sat outside writing this as the signal for the wifi is so much better out here. The crickets are making a lot of noise and there are so many mosquitos i think i will suffer for this pleasure in the morning.

The other girls have all congregated at Bryan and Anita's to catch up on a US tv series on DVD and i think i am going to curl up on the sofa and read my book.  The altitude is never a problem for me here but i do feel quite tired tonight - probably because i have had less sleep than usual over the last week or so and surprisingly it is harder than it seems living with 8 Americans - I really have to listen to the conversation to keep up.  As usual we have had many giggles about the language difficulties.

Church is at 8.30 in the morning so i will be up early!

Hope everyone reading this is well and happy and keeping warm if you are in England!

love
Jenny x
